Heather joins the editorial team at eLife
Heather has joined the editorial team at eLife as a member of the Board of Reviewing Editors in the Plant Biology and Cell Biology sections. eLife is an open access journal, well-known for its own style of open review processes and transparent not-for-profit status. Recently, they have been establishing exciting initiatives to promote development of early career scientists. Consider submitting a paper there!
Wheat carotenoid esterification paper now online & featured at Plant Cell
Our collaboration with Barry Pogson’s group at the Australian National University is now online at Plant Cell. The paper characterizes an enzyme that catalyzes carotenoid esterification in wheat, and we contributed the subcellular localization experiments.
The article was the subject of a brief feature article in Plant Cell which highlights one of our micrographs! The paper was also featured on the American Society of Plant Biologists community, Plantae in a great plain language summary.

Today we welcome our new undergraduate work-study student, Benjamin-Israel Moke to the McFarLab. Ben joins us after completing project in Vince Tropepe’s lab, also in CSB. Welcome to the McFarLab, Ben!
Natalie has been awarded an NSERC Scholarship!
Natalie has been awarded a prestigious NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship to support her PhD studies in the McFarLab.
From the CGS-D website: “The CGS D program supports high-calibre students engaged in doctoral programs in all academic disciplines. This support allows scholars to fully concentrate on their doctoral studies, to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields and contribute to the Canadian research ecosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards.“

Two new PhD students join the lab today: Natalie Hoffmann, who recently completed her MSc with Lacey Samuels at the University of British Columbia and Eduardo Ramírez Rodríguez, who recently finished his Masters of Biotechnology at the University of Melbourne working with Josh Heazlewood and Staffan Persson. Welcome to the McFarLab, Eduardo & Natalie!

Heather is travelling to the University of Guelph this week to join the Plant Canada Meeting. She will present a research talk in the cell biology session and co-host a workshop (with Jacqui Monaghan) for students and postdocs on finding their next position in academia.
Sub-Golgi proteome paper now online & featured at Plant Cell
Our collaboration with Harriet Parsons (Cambridge University/Joint BioEnergy Institute) tracking protein and polysaccharide distribution across sub-compartments of the plant Golgi apparatus is now online at Plant Cell and was also the subject of a brief feature article.
