Raegan has been awarded a prestigious national scholarship, an NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship at the masters level, to support her research in the McFarLab.
From the CGS-M website: “The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master’s (CGS M) program is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.” Congratulations Raegan!
Jenny has been awarded a highly competitive NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award to conduct a summer research project in the lab. Jenny has been volunteering in the McFarLab since last year and we’re excited that she’ll be around this summer to conduct an independent research project!
Physiologia Plantarum has named its top five most highly cited articles for 2019, and the review article by Hsiang-Wen Chen (PhD candidate co-supervised at the University of Melbourne) has made the list!
Hsiang-Wen wrote “Cellulose synthesis during cell plate assembly” at the beginning of her PhD studies to tackle questions about the cell plate, the new cell wall that develops between dividing plant cells.
Congratulations, Hsiang-Wen!
Have you ever wondered how branches have the strength to grow upward against gravity? Check out our recent review how the cytoskeleton influences reaction wood formation in trees: “The cytoskeleton and its role in determining cellulose microfibril angle in secondary cell walls of woody tree species” now available online in the Special Issue on Plant Cell Wall Biology in Plants.
Congratulations Larissa on all of your hard work and another publication from your MSc!
Today we welcomed our new MSc student, Raegan Larson, to the McFarLab with a delicious sushi lunch. Reagan joins us after completing a honours project in Joel Dacks’ lab at the University of Alberta. Welcome to the McFarLab, Raegan!
Natalie was awarded the Canadian Society for Plant Biology Eastern Regional Director’s Award for best talk at the meeting on Saturday. She did a fantastic job of speaking about her MSc project in Lacey Samuels’ lab at UBC. Natalie shared the honour (and cash prize!) with Victoria Lesy from Joe Colasanti’s lab at Guelph.
Most of the McFarLab is travelling to St. Catherines this weekend for the Canadian Society of Plant Biologists’ Eastern Regional Meeting at Brock University. Heather and Eduardo will present posters (P29 & P38) and Natalie will give a talk on her MSc project: “Setting the stage for lignin deposition: spatial distribution and anchoring of enzymes directing lignification in Arabidopsis” at 11:25-11:40 in AS203. Please say hello if you see us there!
Today Jia Hua (Jenny) Huang joins the lab as an undergraduate volunteer. Welcome to the McFarLab, Jenny!
Heather has joined the editorial team at eLife as a member of the Board of Reviewing Editors in the Plant Biology and Cell Biology sections. eLife is an open access journal, well-known for its own style of open review processes and transparent not-for-profit status. Recently, they have been establishing exciting initiatives to promote development of early career scientists. Consider submitting a paper there!
