Larissa Machado Tobias (co-supervised with Gerd Bossinger and Antanas Spokevicius) has been awarded her MSc from the University of Melbourne. Larissa’s thesis received glowing comments from the reviewers and is currently in preparation for publication. She is continuing her scientific career as a lab technician in an industry setting. Congratulations Larissa!

Ben awarded his BSc!
Benjamin-Israel Moke has been awarded his BSc from the University of Toronto during the unique online convocation ceremony today. Ben has been a work-study student and volunteer in the McFarLab since September 2019. Next September, he will start life as a graduate student in CSB. Congratulations Ben!

Raegan awarded an NSERC CGS-M
Raegan has been awarded a prestigious national scholarship, an NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship at the masters level, to support her research in the McFarLab.

Jenny awarded an NSERC USRA
Jenny has been awarded a highly competitive NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award to conduct a summer research project in the lab. Jenny has been volunteering in the McFarLab since last year and we’re excited that she’ll be around this summer to conduct an independent research project!

Hsiang-Wen’s review among the top five highly cited articles of 2019
Physiologia Plantarum has named its top five most highly cited articles for 2019, and the review article by Hsiang-Wen Chen (PhD candidate co-supervised at the University of Melbourne) has made the list!
Hsiang-Wen wrote “Cellulose synthesis during cell plate assembly” at the beginning of her PhD studies to tackle questions about the cell plate, the new cell wall that develops between dividing plant cells.

Natalie wins award for best talk!
Natalie was awarded the Canadian Society for Plant Biology Eastern Regional Director’s Award for best talk at the meeting on Saturday. She did a fantastic job of speaking about her MSc project in Lacey Samuels’ lab at UBC. Natalie shared the honour (and cash prize!) with Victoria Lesy from Joe Colasanti’s lab at Guelph.
